The varsity women’s soccer team faced up against their rival team, the Atascadero Greyhounds, on Jan. 17, for their fourth league game of the season. The game ended in a 1-1 tie with the only goal being by junior captain Amayah Buenrostro.
The Bearcats have previously faced the Greyhounds, on Nov. 15, in a scrimmage preceding league. The Bearcats came out on top, with a 3-1 score.
Going into the match on Jan. 17, Atascadero had a record of 1-2 in league, while Paso had a record of 0-3. Because of their similar records, it was expected to be a well-matched game.

“Honestly, the game started off a bit slow because we’ve been so used to playing on turf and not real grass. Once we adjusted, the pace of the game picked up and we started to play better together as a team,” junior captain Amayah Buenrostro said.
Despite the freezing weather, both teams brought their best effort with a motive to beat their rivalry team. With minimal calls from the refs, the game became very aggressive quickly.
Atascadero was the first to put a goal in the net after they scored in the middle of the first half, but Paso didn’t let this affect them as they continued to battle.
Going into the second half, the teams kept up the competitive play, and the Bearcat’s effort ultimately paid off when they tied up the game after Buenrostro scored off of a direct kick about 5 yards out of the 18 yard box.

“I wish we could’ve won the game, but I’m happy with a tie. I think next time we’ll be able to beat them because we play them at home for senior night so everyone will be putting in their best efforts,” Buenrostro said.
The Lady Bearcats play their next game against the Righetti Warriors on Jan. 21 at home on Parish field. The Warriors currently hold the same record as the Bearcats, 0-3-1, so their game will be a strong match up.
