Photo of an egg beats Kylie Jenner’s record of 18 million likes

A simple picture of an egg surpassed Kylie Jenner with the most likes on an Instagram photo on Sunday, January 13. Although many Instagram users have seen the post floating around their feed, as people encouraged others to like and share the egg, it all started from an account with the bio, “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this,” as TIME Magazine reports. The egg’s journey was completed exactly a week from when they started on January 4.

The account’s current bio reads, “Official world record holders of the most liked picture on Instagram.” As of Sunday night on January 13, the egg had over 20 million likes, but the number continues to climb.

Previously, Kylie Jenner held the record with around 18 million likes on a photo of her newborn daughter Stormi. Her post had beaten Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement.

Students from PRHS had shared and spread the word about the egg. Junior Mairin McNerney was one such student.

“[I] just think it’s pretty funny how some random person was like yeah let’s beat out Kylie Jenner’s most liked photo with a picture of an egg and we actually made it happen,” McNerney said.

This accomplishment has also sparked conversations on other platforms, such as Twitter, where people have created memes and commented on the surprising feat.

In addition to this, news sources such as TMZ and The New York Times have reported on the success of the account.

As for Kylie Jenner’s thoughts on the egg, she seemed to have a rather sassy response. Her humorous post featured a meme that read, “Kylie when she see’s [sic] the world record egg account,” and a caption reading “Take that little egg.”

Although we don’t know who created the account, it appears that through the power of social media the Instagram community has come together to dethrone Kylie Jenner. Not only does this show how fast things can spread on the internet, it also demonstrates how something as simple as an egg can bring — in this case — millions of people together.
