FOOTBALL
Like a game of tug of war, varsity football team has gone back and forth from victorious to unsuccessful throughout the 2024-25 season. With 19 seniors, 34 juniors, and four sophomores, the team has been able to overcome internal challenges and make the most of this season. Senior Anthony Moretto has noticed the team dynamic and how that has influenced their play when they step out on the field.
“All of us are pretty close. Hanging out over the summer outside of practice has really changed our team for the better,” Morretto said.
Junior Tre Clark feels that the team as a whole has been most successful with gaining yardage.
“We’ve been really good at running the ball up the right side which has been setting us up for great passes,” Clark said.
As of Oct 17, 2024, they are 5th place in Mountain League and 2-6 in their overall season.
Their next game is on Oct. 25 vs Mission Prep.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Weather might not be in favor of the varsity women’s tennis team for their 2024 season. From extremely hot game days, to lightning interfering with play, this team works hard in their high competition games. Senior Grace Tellian highlights the strongest aspect of the team this year.
“Our team has been persevering, we lose the first set, we come back and win the next,” Tellian said.
Another senior in her fourth playing on the team, Hannah Rougeot describes their team as “uplifting, hardworking, and spirited.” The women’s tennis team this year on keeping spirits high no matter the outcome of the game. Grounded with determination they hope to make it to a CIF game. Off the court, team bonding has an important place in the team’s heart– and so does food.
Rougeot said, “One of our favorite things is to get food after games at places that aren’t local, like Cane’s”.
With one more game ahead of them, the team is 4-4 in their league.
CROSS COUNTRY
Low in numbers, but big aspirations in their hearts. GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY battles the struggle of only having six girls on their team: three seniors, one junior, one sophomore, and one freshman. Even though they do not have what would be considered a “large” team, they continue to have the attributions of a hearty team.
Captain and senior Jordan Hammond describes the team as “dedicated, positive, and supportive.”
One hour before: laces tied, 30 minutes before: the warm up. 10 minutes before: meet on the line. 3 seconds before: horn. The CROSS COUNTRY BOYS are off, senior Tyler Daillak in the front, flying towards the finish line. Being on varsity for four years, Daillak has noticed the success the team has had with team support.
“We’ve been really good with team spirit and the whole team getting along with each other,” Daillak said.
Their next race is on Oct. 26 near Los Angeles.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Straight down, in front of the 10 foot line, senior and middle Ava Friedling blocked another hit down the throats of the Templeton Eagles on Tuesday, Sept 24, 2024.
Her defense and strong blocking against the Eagles led the Bearcats to a 3-1 win against Nipomo their next game. Friedling believes that the VARSITY GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
team as a whole has found success with a better serve receive defense this year. “We definitely have a stronger serve-receive than we did last
year, which I think has really improved our defense,” Friedling said. Senior Kylee Nancolas believes their strengths lie also in another corner of the court.
“We’ve been so good at scramble balls and taking what could be a detrimental point and turning into something good for our team,” Nancolas said.
As of Oct 16, 2024, they are 4th place in Mountain League and 12-9 in their overall season. Their next game is on Oct. 22 vs Santa Ynez High School.
MEN’S WATER POLO
Aloud clap echoed across the pool as another ball slapped the backboard of the goal as the MEN’S WATER POLO team scored another goal against St. Joseph High School. Captain and senior Brody Rayner sees league champs and top CIF rankers in the team’s future towards the rest of the season.
“I look forward to personally winning league championship and trying to win CIF championship, too,” Rayner said.
Zane Wilson has led the team with 9 assists and has scored 22 points overall this season. Wilson explains that a successful part of the season so far has been due to the team’s offense.
“We’ve been playing well against a lot of the teams because of counterattacks and we have a lot of speed, which a lot of other teams in our league don’t have.”
As of Oct 16, 2024, they are 1st place in Ocean League and 16-9 in their overall season. Their next game is on Oct. 22 vs Santa Maria High School.
WOMEN’S WATER POLO
Splish, splash I was taking a — not a bath but – another win for the WOMEN’S WATER POLO TEAM. 9-0 and first in league this year, the women’s water polo seems to have had a strong start to their season.
With a roster of 17 girls, team captain Emily Joy McNeal describes the team as “strong and one big family who are compassionate towards each other”. The team has been most successful in their quick shots and working together. Junior Lindsey Cockrum shares how she sees the season coming together.
“I think we have a pretty good chance at winning league and hopefully a chance at CIF even though it will be a challenge.”
Drills during practice have been centered on ball handling drills and drives, supporting the team in their weekly games.
As of Oct. 17, they are 1st place in Ocean League and 14-4 in their overall season. Their next game is on Oct. 24 vs Cabrillo High School.
