Mechanic from the show Overhaulin’ Ben Bright gives passionate talk

Walking into the PRHS PAC filled with young students to talk about his career after years of working, living, and thriving on his own – even working on a tv show viewed across the nation – should have seemed like a walk in the park for Ben Bright. But on Thursday, March 14 during tutorial, Bright approached the stage somewhat sheepishly, not wanting to disappoint. Still, a clear confidence glowed on his face as he began to talk about his career as a mechanic working on the show Overhaulin’, students verbalizing their enthusiasm as Bright presented pictures of the cars he used to fix up.

Bright averaged about 120 hours every week working on cars while he was on the show. However, after season five, he ended up quitting to spend more time with his family, as well as to fulfill a dream of opening his own automotive shop.

“It was a huge leap of faith going from knowing that you’re working for someone and having a paycheck every two weeks to being on my own,” Bright said as he talked about his shop “Old Soul.”

Before his recent move to San Luis Obispo, he resided with his family in Morro Bay where he kept his shop open to all students who wanted to come in and learn about mechanics, hoping to provide them with opportunities to pursue their passions.

The thing that helped me get where I am is to learn from every experience I’ve had and incorporate into my life what I needed from it. Have a goal and stick with it.

“I wouldn’t be where I was if someone didn’t give me that opportunity,” Bright said. “You’re given certain talents… and you can have a huge impact on the people around you and what you do.”
