Captain America’s latest film ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is the first Marvel theatrical release of the year and it was mediocre. Which shows the concerning direction that Marvel is heading. I believe the film was average, it had moments and scenes I was completely captivated but most had me bored or disappointed. Captain America’s new film tries to capture the same feeling of heart and humility that the previous films had.
Impressive Acting
The film had moments and scenes which I was completely captivated but most had me bored or disappointed. The acting was well done by the actors, especially Tim Blake Nelson and Carl Lumbly’s performance. The main antagonist was well portrayed by Tim Blake Nelson and was written well. A villain called Samuel Sterns (A.k.a The Leader) who was wronged by President Thaddeus Ross and now wants to bring down Ross’ reputation by any means necessary. With his added intelligence he uses his inventions and understanding of the human body he is cunning and mysterious when we first are introduced to him. Another well performed characther was Carl Lumbly’s Isiah Bradley, a forgotten Captain America who gets into trouble with the law after an incident in the White House. His characther was especially chilling during a scene when Isiah Bradley tells Captain America not to get involved with his crime after attempting to shoot the president.
Hit Or Miss Action
Obviously the film wouldn’t be a Marvel film without action packed scenes. And the film has them, but they were very hit or miss. Out of all the action scenes, only a couple of them had me interested in them. The opening scene had me hooked as Captain America works with Seal Team 6 to retrieve a new metal.
Captain America shows struggle and we are introduced to an important part of Captain America’s character: the lack of any ‘Supernatural” capabilities. It makes Captain America more relatable and down to earth. A scene that I absolutely enjoyed watching was the Battle of Celestial Island. The fight was well orchestrated as it was set in the skies. Each character that was involved made the fight more dramatic and action packed. It was without a doubt, my favorite scene in the whole film.
Final Thoughts of the Film
Despite this, the plot was very convoluted and confusing at times. Especially the inclusion of the Red Hulk, who I anticipated to be an exciting threat in the movie but overall was screwed up by the lackluster climax of the film. The fight wasn’t anything special and the CGI wasn’t remarkable. It was a mediocre ending to a mediocre film. I truthfully wanted this movie to be good, as I loved the previous Captain America films. I loved a few aspects of the film but it also had major flaws such as confusing writing and the fight scenes being hit or miss. It isn’t outright terrible, just mediocre and I don’t know what Marvel will bring to the table.
Final opinion: 5/10
