Midnight Promises

As the moon begins to set, the sun shine with opportunity

As the clock strikes midnight, a new year begins, and alongside this new day new opportunities are born, especially available for students to set a goal for the new year in the hope of doing better— whether it’s aiming for a bench press of 220 or to ace every math test. Regardless of what people strive to achieve, these resolutions are a sign of resolve and dedication; each resolution comes with its own sets of challenges and setbacks of its own. Jackson Chavez Alarcon Junior (11) at PRHS, has made it his mission to dedicate himself throughout the new year, to maintain his goal of going to the gym and working out every day of this year.

A study from DriveResearch showed that 3 in 10 Americans made a resolution in 2024. That’s the equivalent of the countries of China and India combined, out of the 8.3 million people who live on earth. However only about 20 to 10 percent of those resolutions made by people end up succeeding before or during the end of January. As a matter of fact, only about less than 10 percent of all people alone actually end up achieving their goals by the end of the year. Only about 10-11 percent of teens actually end up successfully completing their resolutions while adults on the other hand complete up to 20-26 percent of their resolutions.

Within the number of people who create a resolution, 79 percent of their goals consisted of improving their mental health and physical health. Consisting of resolutions revolving around Diet program (46%), Gym membership (43%), Habit tracking app (40%), Diet/calorie counter app (33%), and Meditation app (33%). These people are dedicating their New Year’s to self improvement, overall better health, and physical appearance.

Alacron stated that the hardest part of maintaining this resolution is keeping his own motivation as the day progresses, stating, “It gets super dark real quick, and I just get lazy when it gets darker.” However, Alacron also said that “having a tight and compact schedule” is what’s helped him perceive the most. Allowing him to conquer the first month of the new year and hopefully the rest that come along. Alacron’s commitment shows that his consistency and planning have made an incredible contribution to his resolution. His journey serves as a reminder that no matter what you want to accomplish, the most challenging tasks can become a daily habit.
