Portal From Sound To Smell
Alt/Indie singer-songwriter Melanie Martinez first entered the fragrance world in 2016 with her Crybaby perfume, following her 2015 debut album. Nearly a decade later, she returned in 2023 with Portals Parfums, a set of four high-end, elemental scents inspired by her album Portals.
With the relaunch of Crybaby on August 4, 2025, Martinez expanded her scent universe again, releasing thirteen Portals Body Mists, each tied to a track from the album. Originally sold as candles, these fragrances were reimagined into wearable scents that let fans step directly into the Portals world.
While I admire Martinez’s creativity, her pricing has definitely increased. The original Crybaby (75ml) retailed for $50, yet Portals Parfums cost significantly more for just 15ml. It feels a bit money-hungry, if I’m being honest. That said, the body sprays themselves won me over- they’re bigger, more affordable than expected, long-lasting, and offer a wide range of scents from masculine to feminine. I ended up buying six of the thirteen for $30 each.
TRACK #1: “Death” – Palo Santo & White Sage
Vibe: 10/10 Smell: 6/10
Listening to Death immediately puts me in a spiritual and surreal headspace, mirroring Martinez’s transformation from Crybaby to the Pink Four-Eyed Nymph. The Death body mist captures this essence perfectly, evoking incense burning in a church. It’s an ironic yet fitting nod to the song’s themes of spirituality and rebirth. Unconventional but stunning, it embodies a sense of transcendence in a bottle.
TRACK #2: “Void” – Smoked Pine & Woods
Vibe: 3/10 Smell: 6/10
Void didn’t match my expectations. The song has always felt chaotic and raw, but the smoked pine gives a surprisingly calm, masculine aroma. It’s pleasant, but it doesn’t capture the distressing, edgy energy of the track. The scent itself is fine, but as someone who prefers sweeter fragrances, it wasn’t my favorite.
TRACK #5: “Light Shower” – Yuzu & Caramel
Vibe: 8.5/10 Smell:5/10
Light Shower is one of my favorites, warm and joyful, full of affection. The caramel in the fragrance should have enhanced that feeling, but the Yuzu overpowers it, making the scent sharper than the song’s warmth. I appreciate the brightness it brings, but it doesn’t fully match the comforting softness of the track. If the Yuzu were toned down, this would easily be a 10/10.
TRACK #7: “Leeches” – Black Tea & Amber
Vibe: 4/10 Smell: 3/10
While I love the message behind Leeches, the fragrance doesn’t reflect the song at all. I expected something earthy and grounding, but it smells powdery–almost like baby wipes. There’s a hint of nostalgia, reminiscent of a grandmother’s perfume, but it misses the raw, emotional energy of the track.
TRACK #8: “Battle of the Larynx” – Peach Skin & Tonka Marshmallow
Vibe: 10/10 Smell: 10/10
This song is all about standing your ground, and the scent embodies that boldness perfectly. Fruity, sweet, with a subtle bitterness, it reminded me of Orange Trident gum with a twist of defiance. Vibrant, confident, and bold–it’s hands-down my favorite of the six I tried.
TRACK #11: “Nymphology” – Pistachio & Fudge
Vibe: 9.5/10 Smell: 8/10
This one leans heavily on pistachio, giving strong Dubai chocolate vibes. The song is empowering, about moving on and realizing your worth, and the scent mirrors that confidence. Sweet, rich, and unapologetically bold– maybe a little strong, but it fits the track’s message well, like a sweet kiss goodbye.
Of the six Body Mists I tried, the Portals collection was definitely unexpected and unique. I’ve never smelled anything like them before. Personally, I wouldn’t repurchase most of them, but Death, Battle of the Larynx, and Nymphology are ones I’d keep using. Overall, I’d give the collection a 7/10.
