The Varsity Boys Water Polo team had a strong season with an abundance of wins, but it unfortunately came to an end on November 6, after a loss to Garces Memorial, home to the Rams.
Including all their tournament, preseason, and playoff games, they had a record of 21-10, however, they ended up winning all of their games in league, giving them a 10-0 record and the title of Ocean League champions.
The team played in four tournaments that took place in Sierra Pacific, Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo, and Foothill. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to win any overall, but they got second place in Sierra Pacific and Foothill.
Throughout their league games, they played 5 teams twice: Nipomo, Pioneer Valley, St. Joseph, Santa Maria and Cabrillo.
“I think we were skilled higher than our competition,” junior Zane Wilson, who played wing, said.
They were winning most of their games in league with extreme goal differentials, for example, 21-2 against Santa Maria on September 26 or 18-0 against Pioneer Valley on October 10.
Junior Colin Daugherty, who played flat, explained that since their energy was kept high, they continued to dominate in their games.
Nearing the end of their season, they were matched up to play Garces Memorial for their first CIF game in Division 2. Garces Memorial were the 5th seed and Paso was the 12th seed, but Daugherty shared that the team still felt confident going into the game.
Sadly, this game closed their season after a 6-10 loss. The boys, understandably upset by this loss, still managed to keep their heads high after reflecting on their season.
“We were sad, but we knew we played well and had a good season behind us,” Daugherty said.
Next season, they are hoping to move back up to Mountain League, but aren’t yet sure if the shift will happen.
“We’re feeling hopeful for next season. I think we’ll be good if everybody puts in work during the off season,” Wilson said.
