1,3,5,7 is the only thing you can hear coming from the cheer competition blue mat as the PRHS Competitive Cheer team performs their routine at Buchanan High School. The Lady Bearcats took home third place on Saturday, Dec. 2 against four teams in this second competition of their winter season.
This year is the first year Paso has a competition cheer team, accompanying the sideline cheer and stunt teams which are integral parts in Paso school spirit.
In cheer competitions, each team performs their three minute routine. Once every team has performed, they are ranked in their division. The teams are scored out of 100 points, and get deductions for every mistake they make. First, second, and third will get recognized with gold, silver, and bronze medals.
During Paso’s performance their music skipped and played the wrong part. Despite this mishap, the team continued their performance, and with help from the crowd clapping the counts, they were able to finish their routine. Because of this mistake, their coach, Codie Wilshusen, talked to the judges and they were able to perform their routine again with a starting three point deduction.
The team scored a 77.10 out of 100, only getting up to five points off in each category. The comp cheer teams’ next competition is on January 20th and they have two more competitions.
