Whether he’s building prosthetic arms, volunteering at Toy banks, or fulfilling his duties as AVID president, senior Bartolo Serrato, creates a pathway for his younger siblings to follow into. Serrato is a stellar student, currently enrolled in seven classes, including the more advanced courses such as AP Calc AB, AP Physics 1, and AP Lit. While also being avidly involved in rigorous courses, Serrato is most involved with the AVID program. He’s been in it for four years and greatly credits the class for its support in his academic journey.
During the beginning of the 2nd semester of the school year, the AVID senior class focuses on finding and applying to scholarships so that the students can receive help with their financial aid. As Serrato began this journey in applying, he found himself winning the Calvert Teachers Association, a seven hundred dollar scholarship, and is a nominee for the CSF scholarship which is two thousand dollars that goes towards his education. Serrato’s biggest motivation comes from being the eldest sibling.
“I have to be the role model and that’s why I try in school,” Serrato said. He has also been running for the PRHS cross country team for three consecutive years.
Theodore Wagner, the AVID 12 teacher, who has worked for the AVID program for 20 years describes Serrato as a perceptive and passionate student, “He’s a super diligent worker and works hard at keeping up with his classes and pursuing his dreams.” Wagner has had Serrato for three years both as a math student and for AVID. Wagner has noticed how Serrato is very good at explaining mathematical concepts to others and how he helps them by asking insightful questions.
This fall, Serrato will attend UC Irvine with a concentration in biomedical engineering. He hopes to work in the medical field, specializing in developing prosthetic and synthetic devices that can help the disabled.
