Alpine Club, created this year by senior Jose Bustamante, attracts skiers and snowboarders to social science teacher John Hatley’s Room 102 during Nutrition on Thursdays, where they can share their love for snow and mountain activities and travel to nearby resorts.
With substantial fundraising efforts, they have managed to execute one of their plans: a three-day trip to Mammoth, March 21-23. Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort is one of the most well-known ski spots, with over 150 runs and an average of 400 inches of snow each year. 20 students attended this incredible trip, some pros on the slopes and some beginners ready to learn.
To prepare for this trip, the club has put on two fundraisers so far this year to raise money. There is a set price for these trips where participants then try to knock off as much as possible of the price by being involved in these fundraisers. They have had a chocolate fundraiser, where students sell chocolate bars for $2 each and another done through Jeffry’s BBQ in downtown Paso Robles where they received a portion of the proceeds made that night.
Besides this upcoming Mammoth excursion, the club focuses on planning trips to other alpine areas such as the nearby China Peak Resort or Badger Ski Resort in California. Bustamante hopes that organizing these trips in the future becomes a simpler free-flowing process to allow for more involvement.
“We try to help the kids who don’t have the money to do it with their family. So we help them and try to get them out there because going to the snow is a big thing, and it’s really fun.” Bustamante shared.
