Laura Camacho Perez, came to the United States when she was 12 years old from Michoacan, Mexico. Camacho works at Paso Robles High School at the front office as a receptionist. On Sunday, September 15, at Paso Robles Downtown Park, Camacho received an award for Hispanic of the Year. This award was given by Mujeres de Acción, located in San Luis Obispo County. Hispanic of the Year award is a “a recognition of the person who helps support and that offers help to the community” said Camacho.
Camacho owned a family restaurant to support her children but later decided to sell after realizing she wasn’t spending as much time with her family.
According to Camacho, she loved customer service and loved serving people and that’s why after owning the restaurant she decided to work at the front office to help people, especially those who struggle with the English language. She once remembers herself struggling with the language, and nobody really helping her or her family.
Camacho’s said her strengths include her devotion to family and her desire to help others. She confesses her weakness is seeing injustices in the world.
“…I’m honored to be Hispanic. I’m really proud of my culture, and that is why I always, always tell my kids to never forget where they came from.” said, Camacho.
