Bearcats, parents and children met together in the quad Saturday Feb 19, 2022 to celebrate black heritage and culture in honor of black history month. Eating barbeque and snow cones, about 75 students of different races and ages played games and danced, wearing shirts that said things like “respect my existence or expect my resistance.” The event was led by the president and vice president of PRHS’ black student union (BSU), Kellen Macharia (12) and Akasha Asberry (11).
Before everyone sang the Negro National Anthem, Asberry said that this celebration was “a way to show people that we’re here, and we’re going to stay here, and we should celebrate what we overcame.” A former president of the BSU, Niya Williams, took the stage and said that she restarted the BSU because “she didn’t want others to have to go through what she had to go through… This BSU is a phenomenal group of people, and I’m so proud of them that they have decided to put this on.” The club received over $1000 in donations to aid in putting on this event.
