Running, jumping, and throwing their way to victory, the Bearcat Track & Field team took first place at the Tri Meet between Atascadero and Templeton on Mar. 19.
In 16 different events, PRHS won 82 points in both Varsity and JV Boys, as well as 59 points from JV Girls. Varsity Girls gained 22 points, ultimately falling short behind Templeton and Atascadero.
“It was nice to get back out there this season, I think we had a very strong start and I’m excited to improve.” junior Sadie Fletcher said, who PR’d in shot put by two feet on Wednesday.
There were many standout performances from the athletes on Wednesday, but one stood out from the rest. Junior Justin Wilhusen broke his previous school record of 15’ 6” in pole vault, jumping 16’ with room to spare. He also won first place in the 300 meter hurdles later in the afternoon.
On the track, Paso prevailed, with Varsity Boys winning both the 800 and 3200 meter events, as well as the 4×400 and 4×100 relays. The sprinters also came out on top, taking the top three spots in the 100 meter dash and first in the 200 meters. Out in the field, JV Girls took first place in both discus and shot put, and junior Rudy Contreras won the Varsity Boys shotput flight. Triple jump was also dominated by the Varsity Boys who took first, second, and third places.
Overall, the Bearcats had a very strong showing on Wednesday and are ready to take on both SLO HS and Righetti at their next home meet Mar. 26.
