Junior Jesse Muth gives SPED students an opportunity to participate in prom festivities
Junior Jesse Muth put on a Special Ed Prom for his Eagle Scout project in Bearcat Hall on Jan. 31, 2020 from 5-7 pm. Fifty students and 20 adult volunteers set up the dance and made the theme, “Night under the stars” a reality for the 20 SPED students who jumped, smiled, sang along with the DJ and enjoyed the night of glamour.
Muth revamped the SPED Prom idea after it had been stopped nine years ago. It finally took place in Paso Robles High school after it had been a SLO county wide SPED Prom. Muth pursued the project after realizing he has family friends in the class.
Muth said Christina Reid, the Special Education teacher, was very helpful, organizing and checking up on him to make sure event details were going as planned.
“It was an incredible event, and I was proud to be an integral part of making this happen for both the students and Jesse,” Reid said.
Muth organized professional photographers to take pictures of SPED students before they went in to dance the night away. Fatte’s Pizza donated pepperoni and cheese pizza and Señor Sancho’s donated chips and salsa. A couple of Paso High departments donated their time and effort to the dance. Teacher Matthew Carroll’s Peer Communication class chaperoned, the Floral department donated flowers and boutonnieres, and leadership provided lights. Muth missed two of his classes because the dance took about four hours to set up. A surprising amount of support lowered Muth’s costs to balloons, table clothes, and decorations.
He thanked everyone that helped him put on the dance and hopes people can make this a tradition.
“I definitely couldn’t have done it without all the support the donations, the time, the food, and floral. It was very awesome that they donated all the boutonnieres and corsages that made the dance a really special night for the kids.”
